Short Biographical Sketch

I started to work on embryo micromanipulation, 30 years ago on embryo multiplication by splitting and embryonic cells nuclear transfer during my PhD. Next I joined Keith Campbell and Ian Wilmut at the Roslin Institute, UK, as a Post Doc. The publications jointly delivered (Campbell, KHS Loi et al., Reviews of Reproduction, 1996; Campbell KHS, Loi P., Biol Reprod. 1994) prepared the ground for the production of the first sheep cloned from embryonic (Campbell et al., Nature 1996;380: 64) and adult cells (Wilmut et al., Nature 1997, 385: 810). After my work at Roslin, I continued to work on Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT), producing the first wild animal by cloning (Loi et al. Nature Biotechnology, 2001), even using dead cells (Loi et al., Biol Reprod. 2002), a breakthrough that has prepared the ground for cloning using lyophilized cells (Loi et al., PLOS ONE 2008), and paved the way to the most recent attempt to clone the mammoth (Yamagata et al., Sci Rep. 2019; 9:4050). The latest breakthrough of my research group is to improve nuclear reprogramming by conferring somatic cells the nuclear structure of a spermatid through the heterologous expression of protamine1 (Iuso et al., Cell Reports 2015; Czernik et al., Nature Protocols 2016; Palazzese et al., PLOS ONE, 2018).

Metrics - My H Index is 36 (Google Scholar), with 4450 citations. My H- index and number of citations may appear low; however, I was amongst the first researchers to work on nuclear transfer. For many years the number of groups worldwide on the topics was below 10 so it is not possible to have a high H-index in such circumstances, considering also that I publish on animal science, notoriously with low IF.
