Curriculum accademico

 

 

Alessia Peserico è RTD-A presso la Facoltà Di Bioscienze e Tecnologie Agro-Alimentari ed Ambientali dell’Università degli Studi di Teramo. Ha conseguito la laurea in Biotecnologie Genomiche presso l’Università Sapienza (Roma) ed ha completato la sua formazione accademica conseguendo il titolo di PhD in Life and Biomolecular Sciences presso la Open University (Regno Unito). L’attività di ricerca è finalizzata alla comprensione dei meccanismi molecolari coinvolti nel signalling intracellulare in contesti fisiologici (follicologenesi ovarica e cellule staminali epiteliali amniotiche) e patologici (tumori).

Le prime attività di ricerca, riconosciute e sostenute a livello nazionale dall’Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro (AIRC) sono state finalizzate allo studio dell’epigenetica dei tumori del colon-retto, ovaio e mammella, con particolare interesse per le modifiche istoniche associate alla acquisizione del fenotipo maligno (ruolo della metiltransferasi istonica SMYD3).  Le sue ricerche sono state inoltre dedicate allo studio di fattori molecolari con ruolo chiave nelle alterazioni metaboliche proprie delle cellule tumorali (AMPK/FoxO3A). 

L’attività di ricerca è finalizzata peculiarmente allo studio dei meccanismi molecolari alla base dello “stem cell homing” ed all’utilizzo di nanoparticelle al fine di localizzare precocemente focolai infiammatori e metastatici e per arrivare idealmente a vettorare farmaci selettivamente nelle sedi dei processi patologici. Particolare interesse è rivolto anche alla caratterizzazione del signalling coinvolto nello sviluppo follicolare in modelli pre-clinici. Tali studi prevedono l’utilizzo di sistemi colturali 2D e 3D (scaffolds e sferoidi).

Le suddette attività sono state svolte in collaborazione con diversi enti accademici e di ricerca: Università di Teramo, University of Manchester (UK), Università di Bari, Open University (UK), IRCCS Saverio De Bellis (Castellana Grotte), IRCCS Istituto Tumori Bari Giovanni Paolo II (Bari), Centro di ricerche farmacologiche e biomediche Mario Negri Sud (Chieti), IZSAM G. Caporale (Teramo).

Complessivamente le ricerche svolte si sono concretizzate in un brevetto e in 17 pubblicazioni su riviste scientifiche internazionali. Alessia Peserico is currently a RTD-A in the Faculty of Bioscience and Technology for Food, Agriculture and Environment, University of Teramo.  She is a graduate of Sapienza University in Rome, Italy (Bachelor’s degree) and Open University in UK (PhD). Her research primarily focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms driving physiological processes such as ovarian folliculogenesis and immunomodulatory properties of the amniotic epithelial stem cells. Also, her interests have been focused on pathways related to tumorigenesis.

Her original research, founded by the AIRC association (Italian Association of Cancer Research), aimed to understand the epigenetic events (SMYD3 methyltransferase) driving tumor formation and progression and to investigate transcriptional mechanisms regulating tumor metabolism (AMPK/FoxO3A) in colorectal, ovarian and breast cancer models. She is focused on the comprehension of mechanisms encompassing tumor stem cell homing, crucial for the development of for innovative, cell-based regenerative and targeted medicine solutions. Also, she is currently working on gaining understanding on the signalling network orchestrating in vitro and in vivo ovarian folliculogenesis by means of 2D and 3D culture models for pre-clinical studies. 

The above mentioned activities have been carried out in collaboration with different research and academic institutions: University of Teramo, University of Manchester (UK), University of Bari, Open University (UK), IRCCS Saverio De Bellis (Castellana Grotte), IRCCS Istituto Tumori Bari Giovanni Paolo II (Bari), Mario Negri Sud Foundation(Chieti), National Reference Centre for Whole Genome Sequencing of microbial pathogens at the IZSAM G.Caporale (Italy).

She has published 17 papers in international journals and she has authored one patent. Bibliometrics parameters are: total citations = 553; h-index = 10; average IF = 5,5 (from Scopus). She is invited reviewer for FEBS Open Bio, Frontiers, IJMS international journals. She is topic member of Current oncology international journal and she is member of the EARC (European Association of cancer Research) and ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology) societies.
