La sua attività di ricerca, svolta presso l’unità di Biochimica e Biologia Molecolare di Teramo oltre che presso il Centro Europeo di Ricerche sul Cervello-Fondazione Santa Lucia/IRCCS di Roma, è incentrata sullo studio multidisciplinare del sistema endocannabinoide in diversi modelli sperimentali di malattie neurodegenerative. Specifici ambiti di ricerca riguardano (i) i meccanismi alla base della segnaletica degli endocannabinoidi, anche attraverso la progettazione e lo sviluppo di sonde specifiche per studiare i dettagli molecolari del loro trasporto e metabolismo; (ii) il coinvolgimento del sistema endocannabinoide nei processi infiammatori e neurodegenerativi implicati nella sclerosi multipla e nel morbo di Alzheimer, e (iii) le interazioni proteina-membrana, con l'accento sulla regolazione delle proteine di membrana (per esempio, i recettori accoppiati a proteine G) da parte dei lipidi circostanti.
