Research Areas
Initially, his research and study focused primarily on topics related to the Italian anarchist movement at the turn of the century and in the post-World War II period. Later, he focused on the associational and cooperative forms of the workers' movement and the forms of "political irregularity" that emerged during the Giolitti era and during the First World War, the latter seen as a rupture between the two centuries and a hotbed of mental and social transformation. His studies—primarily characterized by careful and in-depth archival research and reconstructive interventions—led him to encounter those seemingly "marginal" aspects of Giolitti's Italian history. Over the following years, these aspects became part of a broader and more nuanced historiographical interpretation, such as the one that highlighted the connection that had developed during that period between the world of labor, its social and trade union representation, and liberal institutions. Following this path of study, his research has found a logical continuity in the definition of biographical profiles of Italian anarchists, participating in and contributing to the creation of an important historiographical tool and historical reconstruction of Italian anarchism: the Dizionario Biografico. In this second phase, his focus has been primarily on considering individual militants and the entire libertarian movement from its organizational origins onward, an integral part of the national political and social history, embedded within the complex definition of the categories representing economic, trade union, and political interests in twentieth-century Italy. The development of this long research experience has led him, today, on the one hand, to begin a reconstruction and analysis of some of the key moments of international solidarity that characterized the Italian anarchist movement during its years of greatest expansion, and on the other, to hypothesize a more in-depth study of certain specific moments relating to its relations with the trade union world, particularly with regard to the splits that occurred within certain organizations following Italy's entry into the First World War. In this context, he has completed a volume on the history of Italian anarchists from the Resistance to the years of the movements; this study—providing further inspiration in this area of research—led him to explore some of the characteristic themes of Italian anarchism during the years of the Republic (in particular, the movement's political crisis, issues related to organizational issues, the search for a new trade union dimension, and new perspectives on the study of the libertarian movement in the 1970s and 1980s). It also led to reflection and research on the political history of the Italian Republic from the 1950s to the 1980s.
Subsequently, following the initial phase of research and study, coinciding with personal explorations of war-related issues and the emergence of questions surrounding the imprisonment of Italian soldiers during the Second World War, his interests shifted to a systematic study of these events, situated within the broader context of relations between the Allies (first German, then Anglo-American) and the postwar period. On the one hand, he addressed the imprisonment of Italian soldiers in Germany and Eastern Europe before and after the Armistice of September 1943; on the other, he turned to the Balkans and the Mediterranean basin, considering them areas within which the differences in post-Armistice events could best be captured, both with respect to the soldiers themselves and to relations with old and new allies. In this context, his research and scholarly output has been and continues to be conducted through in-depth research in Italian institutional archives (both civil and military), leading to the drafting of papers, volumes, and reports that accompany his entire career. This area continues to be one of his areas of study, with a systematic use of original documentation from an interpretative perspective attentive to recent methodological/interpretative findings and sources relating to political/military history. In this case, the basic project is the reconstruction and analysis of Italian policies of penetration and occupation during the Fascist and war years, also taking into consideration geopolitical and international approaches. This multifaceted topic still awaits a systematization that fully takes into account the sources made available in recent years, as well as the findings of the most recent research and the many implications associated with this policy: from the regime's secret activities to its policies of denationalization; from relations with its German ally to Italy's quest for international recognition as a power; from ties with clandestine organizations of Balkan nationalities to the actual military occupation; from the transformations brought about by the transition from imagined to real war and—later—to the trauma of the armistice and its subsequent phase; from the actual impact of the war to repatriation, as the war evolved (from occupiers to prisoners). Within this context—with a strong sense of continuity—the projects focus on two main contexts: one focusing on the lesser-known aspects of Italy's participation in World War II, and the other on the different war experiences of Italian soldiers at different times and phases of the conflict, not least the issue of repatriation and reintegration into civilian life. Both are framed within a perspective that also addresses the postwar years in terms of domestic politics and the democratic reconstruction of institutions, within the new bipolar international framework.
These lines of study were subsequently expanded to include the study of trade unions in the Italian Republic and the international dimension of representation, both in terms of their legitimacy in European and global organizations (WFTU, ETUC, ECSC), and in terms of labor protection efforts (Italian emigration, Italian miners in Belgium), both within a more political context (from the events in Hungary to those in Prague), and through a comparative approach between different European trade union models. The origins of these interests—linked to the scholarly encounter with particularly stimulating analytical methodologies and interpretative criteria, as well as to participation in university and non-university study and research organizations—are rooted in the attention he already paid to social/political and international issues, and have led him to a broad range of research and study activities, divided primarily into two areas. On the one hand, national trade union and organizational issues, explored and studied also through the use of historical memory, led him to address research topics previously unexplored from the perspective of trade union organization (such as the experience of the pensioners' union in Republican Italy, and the process of defining and establishing representation in the public sector during the 20th century), or to underscore the importance and contribution that the world of labor made to the rebirth and stabilization of institutions in the postwar years. On the other, the international dimension of labor representation and its political implications during the Cold War years, and the relationships and activities implemented by the CGIL at the European and international levels with respect to labor issues, and the most important issues related to bilateral relations between trade unions and the scenarios and crises of the Cold War. In this third strand, which—as noted—maintains both internal continuity and a transversal connection with the domestic social/political and international political approaches present in his other fields of research and reflection, his activity has led him to a series of interventions, essays, volumes, and research projects that, today, push him toward further fields of study. These new interests remain rooted in the implications of the Cold War on the process of rebuilding a pluralist representation of union interests, and have progressively expanded to the birth and development of republican democracy during the Cold War years, connecting union representation and—more generally—the political dynamics associated with it, with the stabilization and crises of Italian democracy.
