“A metainferential conception of logic”
Abstract
The study of radically substructural, i.e., non-transitive or non-reflexive, logics has prompted the development of a novel account of how proof systems determine
consequence relations. This account is metainferentialist, taking consequence relations to be determined by valid metainferences rather than by valid inferences. In this talk I will present the motivation for adopting a metainferentialist account of logical consequence, the fundamental tenets of the account and some of its philosophical implications.
