Department of Bioscience and Agro-Food and Environmental Technology

At the University of Teramo, the Department of Biosciences and Agro-Food and Environmental Technologies is shaping the future of sustainable food systems and biotechnology through a One Health vision that connects human, animal and environmental wellbeing with a strong commitment to Sustainability. With a strong vocational identity rooted in the agri-food traditions of the Abruzzo region, the Department has developed into a hub for research and training in biotechnology, food science, and the sustainable management of natural resources.

 

The Department's educational offer is notably international, with several degree programmes taught entirely in English, reflecting its commitment to attracting students and researchers from across the world. The Department offers the following degree programmes:

Research

The Department is based on the One Health vision, which envisions human, animal, and environmental health as a single interconnected system. Research takes and interdisciplinary approach, integrating two mutually-enriching complementary cores:

 

  • Food/agri-food: focused on the sustainability of production processes throughout the supply chain from biodiversity valorisation to transformation with a strong emphasis on food safety, quality, and innovation, and efficient use of natural resources. Special attention is given to promoting local traditional products, including their nutritional quality and added value for the territory.
  • Red biotech/advanced biotechnology: focused on studying biological processes at the molecular and cellular levels, with applications in reproduction, tissue regeneration, and new molecule development. The study of cells and biomolecules combines systems biology, in vitro and in vivo experimentation, enabling an all encompassing understanding of biological systems and their translation into innovative therapeutic and biotech applications. The expertise in specialized cells (gametes, embryos, stem cells) as well as physiological and pathological systems, validates advanced tissue engineering techniques, innovative drug design strategies, and transdisciplinary experimental models.

The synergy between these two fields is reinforced by transversal disciplines, including:

  • Metabolic biochemistry, nutraceuticals, and nutrigenomics;
  • Materials and biosensors;
  • Structural biochemistry, molecular biology, and bioinformatics;
  • Pharmacology and toxicology;
  • Applied statistics and modelling.

These areas support an integrated, innovative research model, consolidating a unified vision of Health, sustainability, and technological innovation.
